DICTIONARIES AND THESAURUS

Dictionaries and Thesaurus (Synonyms and Antonyms)

Here's something helpful:

If you want to find more than one dictionary, type the word "define" in front of the word you want to know the meaning of. Google will give you only links to dictionaries.

Synonyms and Antonyms

  • A synonym is a word that has the same meaning (or close to it) as another word. For example, brave and fearless. Often and frequently. Answer and response. Rug and carpet.
  •  "Syno" means with "along with" or "together". "Nym" means "name" or "word".
  • Be careful when you are using synonyms. Frequently, synonyms have close meanings, but they may not be exactly the same. Look both words up in a dictionary to make sure you have the meanings right. For example, rug and carpet are similar, but a bit different.
  • An antonym is a word that has the opposite meaning as another word. For example, hot and cold are antonyms. Wet and dry. Near and farSynonym and antonym themselves are antonyms of each other!
  • The word antonym is made from two words: "Anto" comes from the word "anti", meaning "not" or "against". For example, if you get sick, a doctor might give you "antibiotics", which kill harmful bacteria. In a war, there are anti-aircraft and anti-tank guns. "Nym" means "name" or "word".
